He is the Managing Partner at Advanced Restaurant Consultants (ARC), a provider of highly specialized advisory services to Board and executive Management teams engaged in Restaurant, F&B, and Hospitality. Registered in the UK, ARC draws on collaborations with extensive connections in Australasia, Asia, The Middle East, Europe, and America.
Your journey is not just a testament to a career in hospitality but also a masterclass in management. Can you share how it all started for you in this industry?
Andy Holman: Absolutely, Ashish. It began somewhat unexpectedly when my mother, recognizing my need for direction, sent me a newspaper clipping about Pizza Hut looking for management trainees. That push led me into a journey that has spanned over four decades, taking me from being a crew member to senior management positions across different continents.
From our conversation, it’s evident that customer service and employee training have been pivotal in your career. How do you view the evolution of these elements in the hospitality sector?
Andy Holman: Customer interaction and the ability to manage and train people effectively are core to the hospitality industry. Over the years, I’ve seen the importance of soft skills, like feedback reception, conflict handling, and training systems, grow significantly. However, the shift towards digital has changed how we perceive training and customer interaction. Still, the essence remains the same: it’s about creating memorable experiences and fostering growth among the team.
Speaking of growth, you’ve had an incredible journey with Pizza Hut, followed by significant roles in other major brands. What were some of the key lessons from those experiences?
Andy Holman: My time with Pizza Hut and subsequent roles taught me the importance of systems and processes. For example, understanding that training isn’t just about acquiring knowledge but about applying it effectively. Moreover, transitioning from operational roles to strategic positions highlighted the need for adaptability and constant learning, whether it’s about market trends or customer behaviors.

Each place has its own unique flavor and set of expectations from both the service and the customer’s point of view. It has made me a more versatile leader and has deeply enriched my understanding of global hospitality trends.
With technology playing a bigger role in our lives, especially in the wake of the pandemic, how do you see technology influencing the hospitality industry?
Andy Holman: Technology has been a game-changer for the hospitality industry, more so in recent years. From digital menus and online reservations to AI-driven customer service and operations management, technology has streamlined operations and enhanced customer experiences. However, it’s crucial to strike a balance. While technology can facilitate operations and offer new insights into customer preferences, the heart of hospitality remains in human interaction and the personal touch. The challenge is integrating technology in a way that enhances, rather than detracts from, the human element that is so central to hospitality.

Andy Holman: My advice to young professionals would be threefold. First, be curious. The hospitality industry is vast and varied. Explore different roles and find what truly ignites your passion.
